Are you ready? Before we jump in, let’s go over some common questions to help you get started.

Things To Know Before You Start

1. Choose The Yarn You Love

You can use any type of yarn you love, like cotton, plush, velvet, and so on paired with the right hook size. Different yarn thickness will change the size of your crochet piece: thinner yarn makes smaller piece, thicker yarn makes bigger piece.

2. My Crochet Method

My crochet method – I use the Yarn Under and the pieces are worked in Spiral Round (Continuous Round) Method.

3. Tension Differences

I crochet with a very tight tension. So, if you use the same yarn and hook size as me but your crochet piece turns out bigger or longer, that’s totally normal! You can adjust by adding or removing rounds where the stitch count stays the same.

For example, in the pattern:

Rounds 5 to 12: 30sc (8 rounds)

But if your tension is looser and 8 rounds make your crochet piece look too stretched or long, you can reduce 1 to 3 rounds to get the perfect shape.

4. Safety First for Little Ones

If you’re making this as a gift for a baby or young child, I recommend embroidering the details like the eyes, nose, and mouth instead of using plastic safety parts. Embroidered features are much safer for little ones 🙂

Now that you’ve read the tips, let’s move on to the Materials you’ll need!!!

Materials

1. Yarn. I used Supper Bulky (weight 6) yarn. in Brown and White colors.

– Less than 10 grams of Brown yarn for the Bear.

– Less than 5 grams of White yarn for the Muzzle.

2. Crochet hook suitable with your yarn.

– I used a 5.5mm main hook.

– And a 4mm support hook for joining the two Legs of the Bear, but you can also just use the 5.5mm main hook instead.

– And a 3mm support hook (optional).

3. Safety eyes. I used 14mm.

4. Tapestry needle.

5. Markers.

6. Scissors.

7. Pins

8. White sewing thread (optional)

9. Felt fabric (optional)

10. Fiber glue (optional)

11. Tweezer (optional)

Abbreviations (US Terms)

MR: magic ring

R: Round

st/sts: stitch/stitches

ch: chain stitch

slst: slip stitch

sc: single crochet stitch

inc: increase stitch

dec: decrease stitch

FLO: crochet through front loops only

(…)*x: repeat the instructions in brackets x times

Finished Size

Fold the top opening flat and crochet the two edges together with 3sc. Fasten off. Make 2 pieces.

Check the tutorial for detailed instructions on How to close the Arm.

Round 2. 1ch, turn, 8sc (8)

Check the tutorial for detailed instructions on Round 2.

Check the tutorial for detailed instructions on How to finish the Ear.

Make 2 pieces.

Crochet the Muzzle

With White yarn,

Round 1. 8sc in a MR (8)

Fasten off and sew the finishing loop for a neat look.

Check the tutorial for detailed instructions on How to sew the finishing loop.

Crochet the Leg

With Brown yarn,

Round 1. 8sc in a MR (8)

Rounds 2 and 3. sc around (8) (2 rounds)

Finish the Leg with 1 tight slip stitch into the first stitch. Fasten off.

Check the tutorial for detailed instructions on How to finish the Leg.

Make 2 pieces, do not fasten off the second Leg, chain 1 and join with the first Leg.

Crochet the Body and Head

Round 1. 8sc on the first Leg, 1sc on the joining chain, 8sc on the second Leg, 1sc on the joining chain (18)

Check the tutorial for detailed instructions on How to join the two Legs and work Round 1 of the Body without leaving any gaps. Normally, the usual joining method can leave a gap between the legs that needs sewing later, but in the tutorial I’ll show you a neat way to connect them seamlessly. Of course, feel free to use your own favorite joining method if you prefer!!!

Here’s the method I used in the Tutorial:

First, on the second Leg, after making a tight slip stitch, chain 1 (joining chain) and join it to the first Leg with 1sc. This stitch counts as the first stitch of Leg 1, so place a stitch marker there.

For Leg 1, you have 7 stitches left. Continue crocheting 6 stitches and leave the 8th unworked.

Normally, this would leave a gap at the joint between the Leg and the joining chain. To close the gap, make a sc2tog using the 8th stitch and the first stitch of Leg 1. This sc2tog should be made as tight as possible. Its purpose is to close the gap at the joining point.

Next, crochet 1sc across the joining chain and continue onto Leg 2. Leg 2 has 8 stitches, work 7 stitches and leave the 8th unworked. Just like with Leg 1, the 8th stitch of Leg 2 will be worked together (sc2tog) with the first stitch of Leg 2 to close the gap between the Leg and the joining chain.

Then, crochet 1sc on the joining chain and finish round 1 of the Body with a total of 18 stitches.

Round 2. (8sc, 1inc)*2 (20)

Round 3. sc around and attach the Tail (20)

At R3, attach the Tail to the Body with 3sc at the end of R6 (and possibly including the beginning of R7). Use 2 markers to mark the attachment stitches, ensuring the Tail is centered on the Body.

Tip: Leave the yarn tail of the Tail outside, as we will use it to secure the crochet piece later.

Check the tutorial for detailed instructions on Round 3.

Round 4. sc around (20)

Round 5. (8sc, 1dec)*2 (18)

Round 6. (7sc, 1inc)*2 (16)

Round 7. sc around and attach the Arms (16)

At R7, attach the Arms to the Body with 3sc per Arm, with a distance of 5sts between the two Arms at both the front and back sides of the Body.

Stitch placement might differ depending on whether we have tight or loose yarn tension while crocheting. Therefore, feel free to adjust accordingly based on your crochet piece, ensuring that the joined Arms are aligned with the Legs.

Tip: Leave the yarn tails of the Arms outside, as we will use it to secure the crochet piece later.

Check the tutorial for detailed instructions on Round 7.

Round 8. (2sc, 1dec)*4 (12)

Stuff the Body firmly.

Round 9. FLO sc around (12)

Round 10. 12inc (24)

Rounds 11 to 16. sc around (24) (6 rounds)

Insert the Eyes between Rounds 14 and 15, 5sts apart.

Check the tutorial for detailed instructions on How to insert the Eyes.

Round 17. (2sc, 1dec)*6 (18)

Round 18. (1sc, 1dec)*6 (12)

Stuff the Head firmly.

Round 19. 6dec (6)

Fasten off. Weave the yarn tail through the front loops of the last round and pull it tight to close off the piece. Hide the yarn tail inside.

Finish the cute Bear 🐻

– Attach the Ears onto the Head.

Check the tutorial for detailed instructions on How to attach the Ears.

– Secure the crochet piece by tying all the yarn tails together.

Check the tutorial for detailed instructions on How to secure the crochet piece.

– Sew the Muzzle onto the Head.

Check the tutorial for detailed instructions on How to sew the Muzzle.

– Embroider the Rosy Cheeks.

Check the tutorial for detailed instructions on How to Embroider the Rosy Cheeks.

– Cut a little heart shape from felt fabric and glue it on as the Bear’s Nose, or simply embroider one if you don’t have felt fabric.
